Taipa Area School Ki-o-Rahi Development Squad

Our vision is to develop a foundation for learning, sharing and revitalising the traditional game of Ki-o-Rahi to empower our children and raise the profile of our school and community.

Taipa Area School has introduced the Ki-o-Rahi Development Squad, a group of fifteen students currently attending Year 9 to Year 13 who were invited to tour Europe in September 2010. Five students were also selected for the New Zealand Secondary School Ki-o-Rahi team which competed in Napier in July 2010.

In recognition of recent achievements and a growing commitment to the revival and promotion of Ki-o-Rahi, a traditional Maori game, a very talented and dynamic team from the school was invited to attend an Indigenous Festival at Casa Asia in Barcelona from the 23rd - 27th September 2010.

Representation at this event included presentations and demonstrations of the game to large audiences as well as kapa haka performances expressing the culture and heritage of New Zealand Maori and our treasured pastimes.

In early October 2010, the group joined the New Zealand National team in Gif-Sur-Yvette near Paris to participate in an international Ki-o-Rahi tournament led by All Black sports legend Buck Shelford and Maori sports practitioner, educator & author, Harko Brown.
